Your emergency fund target
Your chosen coverage multiplied by essential monthly expenses.
How to choose an emergency fund target
Start with the bills you would still need to pay if your income stopped or a surprise expense appeared. This often includes housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, insurance, and minimum debt payments.
Formula: Essential monthly expenses × months of coverage = target. Subtract existing emergency savings to find the gap. Divide that gap by your timeline to see an estimated monthly contribution.
Three or six months are useful planning scenarios, not universal requirements. Variable income, job uncertainty, dependants, and access to other support can change what is appropriate. Keep emergency cash readily accessible and adjust the plan to your circumstances.
