How to read your monthly budget

Income minus planned allocations = money left to allocate. Allocations include essential expenses, flexible spending, savings contributions, and extra debt payments. Minimum debt payments belong in essentials; additional debt payments belong in your goals.

If the number is negative, you have assigned more money than your income supports. Revisit flexible costs, contribution targets, and required payments. If the number is positive, decide whether it should cover irregular expenses, go toward savings, or stay as a planned buffer.

The percentages describe your actual plan, not a mandatory 50/30/20 rule. Annual subscriptions, annual insurance, and seasonal spending should be converted into monthly estimates if you want them included. Confirm that your plan also leaves space for irregular and unexpected costs.
